About the program
RISKY BUSINESS
The Alabama Captive Insurance Association’s Risky Business Internship program is the first multi-entity program in the State of Alabama to offer internships to Risk Management and Insurance students year-round. Risky Business is designed to encourage a new generation of students to consider careers in the captive insurance and alternative risk management segments of the market. The program is a unique and collaborative initiative that provides college students the opportunity to gain experience in multiple risk management environments during the course of the internship. During the program, the interns will work with two (Summer) or three (Fall & Spring) different ACIA member companies on a 5-week rotation. The program will provide college and graduate students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the Risk Management and Insurance industry by exposing them to the daily operations of several different sectors of the industry.

Bennett Brake

Hometown: Florence, Alabama
College/ University: Troy University
Major: Risk Management and Insurance
Experience in the Internship Program:
Prior to the internship, Bennett had limited experience in Risk Management and Insurance. He appreciated the patience that the organizations within his internship rotation had with him as they laid the foundation for him. Bennett’s first rotation was spent observing and assisting employees with simple tasks, while his second rotation was focused directly on his personal development. Bennett was continuously challenged to learn new concepts, and he felt that the internship was a great first experience for him to obtain introductory experience in the RMI field of study. Bennett recommended that any student looking to get acclimated to the RMI field should apply for the Risky Business Internship Program.

Kyle Hines

College/ University: Troy University
Major: Risk Management and Insurance
Experience in the Internship Program:
With only about 4% of his generation in the Risk Management Industry, Kyle felt that the path to success would not be as difficult as for other programs, especially with Troy’s RMI program having one of the highest job placement percentages in the state. During the internship, Kyle gained insight into the industry and a strong outlook on what he wanted to do with his career. He encourages other students interested in the Risky Business program to go in with an open mind and an open schedule.

Caeden Godfrey

Hometown: Rainbow City, AL
College/ University: Troy University
Major: Risk Management/Insurance
Experience in the Internship Program:
My experience in the Risky Business Program was much different than the internship that I had this summer. The material that I get exposure to during the Risky Business program is new and exciting every day. I never felt like the work that I was doing was repetitive or boring. With the internship, I gained insight into how the captive industry worked and obtained a better understanding of how to manage an insurance company. I strongly encourage anyone in the risk management/insurance field to apply for the internship. It is a great way to see the insurance industry from a different perspective than your basic insurance carrier.

Major: Risk Management and Insurance
Experience in the Internship Program:
My interest in the Risk Management and Insurance field sparked because I knew that there would be many different job opportunities after graduation. During the internship, I gained insight into how the industry works as a whole. I would encourage other students to be open-minded to the different areas within the field of insurance and learn as much as possible while asking questions to better understand how everything operates. I highly recommend people interested in an internship to apply for the Risky Business Internship Program because it will help you gain experience in multiple areas of the field. Also, it is an excellent way to start building your book of business which is what this industry is all about.
